Nearly 80 Gather in Mesa for a Meet and Greet in Support of Greg Stanton

Nearly 80 people from more than ten countries and a range of cultural backgrounds gathered at Tan Hua Inc. in Mesa on October 17, from 3 to 5 p.m., for a community meet and greet in support of U.S. Congressman Greg Stanton. Organized by friends in the Asian American community, the event focused on water security, economic development, infrastructure, and voting.

Fanny Tan, owner of Tan Hua Inc., has long been involved in serving the local community. Through Chinese tea and traditional Asian wellness practices, she creates opportunities for people from different backgrounds to connect. During the event, Stanton thanked Fanny Tan and Tan Hua Inc. for their contributions and recognized their efforts to bring people together.

Running for Reelection in Arizona’s 4th Congressional District

Stanton, a former Phoenix mayor, currently represents Arizona’s 4th Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives. He is running for reelection on November 3.

The district includes the Tempe area and parts of Phoenix, Mesa, and Chandler, including communities in western and central Chandler. Because a city can be divided among different congressional districts, residents should check their district using their voter registration address. Only eligible voters registered in the 4th Congressional District can vote in this congressional race.

The event gave residents a chance to learn about Stanton’s positions and ask questions about issues affecting their daily lives.

Supporting Checks and Balances and Working Across Party Lines

Speaking about the current political climate, Stanton stressed the importance of democracy and checks and balances. He said the legislative, executive, and judicial branches should keep one another in check, and Congress must carry out its oversight responsibilities.

Although he is a Democrat, Stanton said he values working with lawmakers from both parties to solve practical problems. He emphasized clear communication and cooperation rather than getting caught up in partisan disagreements.

Supporting Local Water and Transportation Projects

Stanton’s work on local funding offers residents a closer look at his record in Congress.

According to information released by his congressional office about fiscal year 2024 funding, his community project requests included water and transportation improvements in Mesa, Tempe, and Chandler:

  • Mesa water system improvements: About $960,000 for water main improvements and another $800,000 for a smart meter project. The planned purchase and installation of about 12,000 smart meters would help identify unusual water use and reduce water loss.

  • Tempe groundwater recharge: $1.89 million for the Kyrene recharge well and about $960,000 for related pipelines. These projects would help store recycled water for future use and improve the city’s ability to handle drought.

  • Chandler public transportation: $1 million for Chandler Flex, the city’s on-demand public transportation service, to support a larger service area and more travel options for residents.

Focusing on Water Security and Advanced Manufacturing

During his remarks, Stanton discussed Arizona’s water challenges. He said protecting water resources and maintaining a reliable long-term supply require cooperation between both parties, as well as continued work between federal and local governments.

On the economy, he discussed the CHIPS and Science Act and the importance of supporting advanced manufacturing. Pointing to Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company’s (TSMC) investment in Arizona, he said the semiconductor industry can help create jobs, attract skilled workers, and support the local economy.

He also said that as the greater Phoenix area continues to grow, investment in roads, bridges, public transportation, and schools needs to keep up.

Campaign Priorities: Water, Living Costs, and Job Training

Beyond the topics discussed at the event, Stanton’s campaign website outlines several areas he hopes to focus on.

On water security, he supports having all Colorado River Basin states share conservation responsibilities fairly as they negotiate river management rules for the years after 2026. He also supports continued federal investment in water recycling, groundwater recharge, and local water infrastructure.

On lowering living costs, he supports extending Affordable Care Act (ACA) premium tax credits and making prescription drug price caps available to more people. He also supports increasing the supply of housing through measures such as expanding Low-Income Housing Tax Credits and converting unused properties into homes. These are policy proposals that would still need to go through the appropriate legislative and government processes.

On jobs and workforce training, he supports further investment in the semiconductor industry, along with stronger community college career programs, skills training, and apprenticeships. The goal is to give residents more opportunities to enter fields such as advanced manufacturing. He also supports raising the minimum wage and expanding paid sick leave.

Encouraging Voters to Make a Plan

With the midterm election approaching, Stanton encouraged voters who have received their mail ballots to complete and return them early. He also urged people to share voting information with family, friends, neighbors, and coworkers, and to encourage young voters to get involved.

He said participation in democracy goes beyond presidential elections. Congressional and local elections also affect daily life and the future of the community. He encouraged voters to check their voting options, locations, and deadlines ahead of time.

The gathering gave residents from different backgrounds an opportunity to speak directly with an elected representative. Discussions about water, jobs, transportation, and living costs also helped attendees learn more about Stanton’s record and policy goals.
