Arizona Chinese Community Supports “Summer of a Million Meals”

– Tan Hua Inc Helps Rally the Community

The Arizona Chinese community once again showed unity and positive spirit! The 8th annual “Summer of a Million Meals”, hosted by United Food Bank, has officially launched. After learning about the campaign, Tan Hua Inc helped share the information with local Chinese groups and encouraged everyone to join this meaningful charity effort. The community responded enthusiastically.

The donation event took place on July 10 at 4:30 p.m. at the United Food Bank headquarters in Mesa (358 E Javelina Ave, Mesa, AZ 85210). It was hosted by Sally Harrison, President and CEO of the Mesa Chamber of Commerce. The goal was to bring the community together to provide meals for children in need during the summer.

Fanny, representing Tan Hua Inc, shared:

"As part of this country, we in the Chinese community have always valued unity and helping others. Reaching out during difficult times is one of the most meaningful parts of our culture."

“Summer of a Million Meals” is co-organized by 12News and several community partners. It is supported by Kroger and Fry’s Food Stores through the Zero Hunger | Zero Waste Foundation, which works to fight hunger and food waste across the U.S., especially among children.

With inflation and rising living costs, food insecurity in Arizona has become more serious. United Food Bank noted that every $1 donation provides 5 hot meals, and any amount can help make a difference for kids in need.

A total of 12 Chinese community members came to the event on their own and made donations to support the cause. They included:

  • Helen Zhang (President, Chinese United Association of Phoenix)

  • Ning Wu (President, Chinese American Federation of Arizona)

  • Wanbo Zhang (President, Phoenix Chinese Senior Association)

  • Gongbo He (Chairman, Phoenix Palace Restaurant)

  • Zhitao Tan

  • Liubai Yi

  • Qunmei Wu

  • Qiangwei (Director of Sales, West America International Realty)

  • Ms. Lily

  • Ming (Arizona Chinese News)

...and other caring individuals. Their support showed the strong spirit of unity and care that has always been part of the Chinese community. It also sent a clear message: “We are here. We care.”

Mesa Chamber of Commerce President Sally Harrison and United Food Bank CEO Jason Reed were also present to receive the donations and personally thanked the group. Jason Reed said, “Support from the Chinese community means a lot to us. It’s more than just donations—it lifts our spirits.” Sally Harrison also noted that the Chinese community's participation shows the diversity and warmth of Mesa.

At the end, Ms. Fanny thanked everyone: “Thank you for your support. We hope that together, we can bring a warm and hopeful summer to the children who need it most.”
