After 8+ months in ICE detention, she’s back where she belongs: running her West Valley restaurants with her family.」

Rep. Greg Stanton Visits Local Chinese Family for Lunar New Year, Celebrates Kelly Yu’s Return Home

On February 22, 2026, during the Lunar New Year holiday, Greg Stanton, representative of Arizona’s 4th Congressional District, was invited to the home of Rongchan Tan (Fanny), owner of 譚華參茸行(Tan Hua Inc). He shared a simple lunch with reporter Hu Shan from Next Weekly Chinese Media, experiencing the festive atmosphere of the Chinese Lunar New Year.

Fanny thoughtfully prepared traditional New Year treats including rice cake, peanuts, candies, and assorted holiday snacks symbolizing “rising higher each year” and “sweetness and prosperity.” She also cooked a homemade lunch for the occasion. Rep. Stanton said he appreciated the opportunity to visit a Chinese American household and experience firsthand the cultural traditions and meaning of reunion during the Lunar New Year.

During the visit, Stanton spoke about what he described as one of the most encouraging developments in recent months: the return of local restaurant owner Kelly Yu, whom he had closely supported throughout her immigration case. After being detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) for more than eight months, Yu has now been reunited with her family. In a recent Facebook post, Stanton wrote: “Welcome home, Kelly Yu! After 8+ months in ICE detention, she’s back where she belongs: running her West Valley restaurants with her family.”

Kelly Yu, a West Valley restaurant owner, has long been active in community service, donating meals to those in need and supporting local schools and law enforcement organizations. She had been detained at the Eloy detention facility since late May 2025 due to immigration status issues. Stanton previously traveled to the facility in Eloy, Arizona, seeking to check on her well being and review conditions there, but was denied entry. He later stated publicly that the restriction conflicted with the spirit of federal law and formally raised concerns with the Department of Homeland Security and relevant congressional committees.

Over the past several months, Stanton repeatedly called for Yu’s release, emphasizing that she “is not a criminal, but a mother, a wife, and a small business owner.” He noted that while federal officials had pledged to prioritize the deportation of violent criminals, current enforcement practices have at times resulted in broader, sweeping actions that affect long standing community members and local businesses.

Speaking again at Fanny’s home, Stanton told reporters that the United States needs “smarter” immigration reform rather than broad, mass deportation policies. “The focus should be on violent criminals, not on someone like Kelly, a community leader who has created jobs, supported local organizations, and donated to law enforcement during her two decades in this country. She’s doing all the things we would want somebody in the United States to do,” he said.

Stanton added that Yu’s case illustrates how aspects of the current immigration system can sometimes work against, rather than advance, the country’s interests. For individuals like Yu who have deep community ties, he believes there should be a way to go through the legal immigration process without the constant risk of detention, along with a clear and workable path to citizenship.

Reflecting on Yu’s return home, Stanton said with a smile, “Seeing her back with her family and at her restaurant is truly moving.” He emphasized that he will continue advocating for comprehensive immigration reform that both protects national security and recognizes humanitarian and community considerations.
